SR 520 Montlake Project – Removing the last of the SR 520 ramps through the Arboretum
In spring 2024, contractor crews removed the last of the SR 520 ramps that once cut through Seattle’s Washington Park Arboretum. The removal also included the only portion of the planned R.H. Thomson Expressway that was ever built. One piece of the expressway, known to WSDOT as bent #2, was preserved and will serve as an historical marker to commemorate the community effort to stop the R.H. Thomson Expressway project.

On September 12, 2022, our striping crew was painting fresh lines on US 2 between Wilbur and Davenport when they were involved in a work zone collision. The striper truck was badly damaged and ended up needing repairs that took more than a year to complete. But lives can’t be replaced. Thankfully, the entire crew was able to walk away from the collision, but a matter of inches made the differen...

Still not done
A great experience to know and navigate through the construction, and how cool that there is content like this that helps us to better understand this project through this kind of videos.
wouuld be way better if it was built
Very neat history fact, thanks!
Wazzup from Hanford site 😊!
This is so cool to watch
Same amount of syllables to say State Route as to say SR.
super cool! beats war!
That very last one they buffed in the last seconds of the video looked like a gride tag rip
wish they would start using them in Australia. we have some totally useless intersections
I feel safe driving through this tunnel. I also miss the viaduct.
DDIs work very well when a large proportion of vehicles on the non-freeway road turn onto the freeway. For an intersection in which a high proportion of the non-freeway road vehicles do NOT turn onto the freeway (that is, just go straight), DDIs are not so good. There is probably some "sweet spot" above which converting to a DDI is worth it, but I do not know what that sweet spot is. I would not assume it is just 50%.
Thank you for the update and for educating us about this wonderful project. It helps us to notice what you do. We appreciate all the hard work and dedication you put into making our roads safer and more efficient, not only for us but also for the wildlife. We are grateful for everything you deliver. ✨⛑
Omg, I have been driving in WA for 35 years now and I have NEVER seen this work. The construction from Olympia to Aberdeen has been going on and off for the last 5 years and there has never been one sign saying do this. Here is the reality: get in the correct lane early otherwise you are line cutting. Which means you are pissing everyone off, when you cut into the front you force everyone who has been in line to slam on their brakes. Since the WADOT sucks with communication and signage and construction in general, my suggestion is to hire actual proffesionals who will listen to drivers who use the roads and provide caring construction zones that are safe and speedy at the same time. You will see my finger if you cut the line!
Surviving potholes has become an adventure. 🙄
Make sure to report them when you see them and they will be filled promptly!
Hahaha! 😆 Good joke! Untrue.
@@kelsey809 I report them all the time and they are filled within a week
Nice. I’ve been reporting two rough spots for years. I noticed this afternoon that one location was finally repaired!
@@kelsey809 woohoo! hope they fix that other one soon now that the weather is cooperating!
Awesome! Thanks for helping nature!
Improving fish mobility is always a good thing.
Filling potholes as well?
The fact that the computer is a WSDOT Pro is such a good touch!
Is that actually supposed to be US12 at 0:44?
No doubt. It seems to be not too uncommon for that highway, for whatever reason- I remember the same improper signage over 30 years ago!
I had looked this up yesrs ago and never saw a good explanation. Glad i looked again! Thanks!
Awesome video! Really cool truck!
😅 the jazz .. also they don't lie it's really that much cleaning but LOL it's very enjoyable work
WSDOT is very efficient. Demolition was projected to take 9 months, but they were able to complete the job in only 6 minutes.
This rendering is not entirely accurate. I'm a real estate professional and can discern its accuracy.
Hey that happened on my bday
Stop this madness. We don't need more freeways creating more traffic and more pollution. When will this agency ever learn
Money grab! 2 person hov drivers are penalized so single drivers can pay toll instead of reducing cars on the road.
This looks very expensive and will take up even more land for roadways. How about an overpass with a trafic circle underneath. Im sure just as expensive.
Roundabout would cost more because it would take more right-of-way outside of the prior interchange design. That would require more stormwater management facilities, as well as shoring / retaining walls due to encroaching into the slopes of the overpass highway. And the roundabout would not be efficient for places with high traffic volumes. They max out at 1500 vehicles per hour for single lane roundabout (2500 for dual lanes). Roundabout interchanges are better for rural surburban locations where traffic is not projected to increase.
The hybrid theory is a fallacy. Salt water is corrosive. Inslee is on a fantasy mission chasing windmills
Once again, bicyclists get thrown onto a sidewalk forcing them to dodge pedestrians.
The largest wildlife bridge over a major freeway is being built right now in Agoura Hills CA on US101 (Ventura Freeway). Known formally as the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, this bridge is privately financed by donations and construction supervised by CalTrans, which also opens bidding for construction contractors on this project. Other wildlife crossings also exist but they are tunnels or underpasses below freeways/highways such as a pair of undercrossings below State Route 71 near Corona.
Great that is being "improved", but improvement is always subjective. Call it what it is, a capacity increase, or lane additions.
Feedback from commuting around this project for the last year: When traveling Southbound on Montlake Blvd, the layout and signage of the two right hand turns onto 520 (west and then east respectively) is pretty hazardous. Initially the signage suggests that the right most lane is Westbound only, but then it allows drivers to continue through that intersection, meanwhile the second right most lane says 520 east, where you then need to get into the right most lane after the westbound turnoff. Ideally that right most lane would be a MUST turn onto westbound 520, and the second right most would then flow into the right most lane after that. Thanks, and already seeing some big improvements with this project!
I feeel bad for cities that have wide roads and highways cut through them. Almost an unfixable problem.
Looking forward to worse backups than ever before. Good job wsdot. Overpass with lanes for the soft hands to make their way in would make more sense.
Induced demand is real, but nobody's reading the description: "we know we can't fix traffic by adding lanes," it says. We're not dealing with amateurs here :) this is a simple reconfiguration that should remove a bottleneck, and just one part of a plan to improve overall transit, cars and buses alike.
If you still don't believe they know what they're doing, go to the middle of Seattle and pick another random point within 6 miles of it, switch to transit, and see how long of a trip it is. You'll be surprised to see just how comprehensive the transit network is!
More govt. infliction it appears, because they will build it so we can see how the impact goes until from their limited viewpoint, not from the travelers! What about icy conditions, etc. ?
I just hope that traffic coming downhill on sr104 after a bridge closure will YIELD to traffic in the round about coming off the 2 lateral roads.
I'm a big fan of roundabouts and they are proven to move more traffic efficiently than a stop light. However, This is a very poor location for a roundabout. Semis and large vehicles, motorhomes, ect will not be able to accelerate up the hill appropriately from the round about. This will cause more congestion and risky passing behaviors which commonly happen on this hill as it is when people get in the passing lane and then fail to quickly pass the slow moving vehicle and then move to the right lane. Large trucks, semi's ect coming down the hill will be hard pressed to slow down for the roundabout. If this is built, plan on quite a few accidents where large trucks plow through the roundabout.
The highway maintenance work on snoqualmie pass are very very lazy, the winter weather conditions is not the problem but the people maintaining it when it happens is the problem and it a job I have done before in Illinois and North Dakota.
This is all because Port Ludlowites can't stand to wait more than three seconds for a left turn into 104
All I can say is😂😂😂😂
